By tracing the evolution of American vowels, you can see that New York City and Philadelphia split off from each other some time toward the turn of the 20th century. Then, as noted in the Chris Matthews video above, there are many vowel and consonant differences in Philadelphia English. But as mentioned in the introduction to this article, the accent of Pittsburgh is unlike that of the other cities here.
There are a number of reasons for this. Being a major steel city, Pittsburgh has always been attractive for working-class people, so immigrants came from all over the world to find jobs. One of the groups that influenced the accent most was the Scotch-Irish , who started coming to the United States in the 19th century. As you can probably guess, Pittsburgh also has some interesting vowels. The vowels have also been shaped by groups of people from the Midwest, New York and Philadelphia.

If the r is at the end of the word or right before a consonant it gets dropped. New York English carries what linguists call a non-rhotic accent with speakers often dropping R s that are followed by another consonantturning forget into fuhget and girl into goil.
There is also a class element here- working class folks have stronger accents than middleupper class people. In most parts of the country these two words have the same vowel sound. And the Sopranos even with the mob money are working class isnt that part of the challenges for Edie Falcos character on the show. Yes everyplace has an accent.
Finally of course everyone thinks. Just two college roommates comparing their accents. If so is it the same as a New York accent. Only one is actually from NJ. American English is always changing. Origin of an accent. The way we talk dates back to when settlers first came to New Jersey from Europe in the seventeenth century. And the original settlers laid down the dialect patterns that have survived for hundreds of years, to the present day.
